Leroy Sane scored a well placed shot to ensure Manchester City closed the gap between league leaders Liverpool. Before the game, Liverpool had not lost a single game in the premier league.
In the 18th minute, Liverpool could have taken the lead, after Mane’s strike hit the post; Stones kicked it straight at Ederson who came close to scoring, but the ball was cleared from crossing the line.
In the 31st minute, Kompany was lucky not to see red after he gave Mohammed Salah a two-footed tackle. However, Sergio Aguero put Man City in front in the 40th minute, slamming the ball into the roof of the net after a Bernardo Silva cross from the left. The half-time result was 1-0 in favour of Man City
The second half begun and Man City pressed high searching for a second goal, as Liverpool showed more care in holding onto the ball.
In the 58th minute, Liverpool switched to 4-2-3-1, with Mane taking the right position, Wijnaldum on the left with both Firmino and Salah going through the middle. In the 64th minute, Liverpool’s determination paid as they equalized after Alexander Arnold switched the ball to Robertson who then plays it across for Firmino to head home brilliantly from close range.
However, after eight minutes, Man City took the lead again after Leroy Sane ran down the left striking the ball, which found its way in after hitting the inside of the left post. Again, Aguero nearly made it 3-1 in the 81st minute after a quick counter attack, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson rushed out to ensure the ball goes out for a corner.
In the 83rd minute, Salah came very close when Henderson played him in; He seemed to have lost the ball but somehow managed to hit it across Ederson who gave a quick reaction save, tipping the ball past the post. Man City came close once again after Lovren made a mistake, allowing Bernado Silva to gain possession of the ball, but Alisson made a great save; the ball then fell to Raheem Sterling, but his shot went to the side net.
Five minutes extra time was given, and Liverpool pressurized for an equalizer, but Manchester City stood firm handing Liverpool their first defeat in the premier league this season.
