Barcelona beat PSG and Man City to the signing of De Jong as he signs a five year deal and will be joining them this summer.
Barcelona paid an initial fee of €75 million (£65m/$85m) for the 21 year old who was also a target for Europe-top clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.
The highly-rated player will link up with his team mates in July after signing a five year contract, a deal that could include an additional €11 million (£10m/$12m) in add-ons.
This will be the Blaugrana’s third signing in this January transfer window; loan arrivals of Jeison Murillo and Kevin Prince Boateng from Valencia and US Sassuolo respectively happened earlier.
Barcelona President Maria Bartomeu tweeted: “With the arrival and signing of de Jong we add talent, youth and Barça style to our sporting project. We are convinced that he will be a key part of our team for years to come. Welcome, Frenkie!”
Following the transfer, De Jong said: “Barcelona have always been a dream club for me. The fact that they were so serious about getting me and that I have a good chance of getting playing time made the decision easier. I already watched Barcelona as a kid and then when I was a bit more aware of the game you had the Guardiola era with all their successes. That turned me into an even bigger fan. I have always been a big fan of Messi, although I liked the entire team.”
On completion of his move to Spain, De Jong will have to compete with other talented Barcelona midfielders.
Concerning this, he said: “It’s not like I am going to Barcelona as a tourist who is there to watch Messi in action. I am not going to say that I will bench Busquets or anything! But I think I have a good chance of getting plenty of minutes.”
The signing of De Jong now includes him among former Ajax players to sign for Barca; others include Ronald Koeman, Johan Cruyff, Frank de Boer, Patrick Kluivert, and Luis Suarez among the very successful ones.
