The Federal Government has made it known that efforts would be made to address the menace of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
The move was as a result of the call made by two civil society groups, and FlexiSAF Foundation on Federal Government to tackle the high rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria with immediate effect.
Mr. Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education acknowledged unavailability of factual data in the country as a hindrance to planning and also said that the Ministry had endeavored to find empirical means of getting the real figures right for the past four years and as well implementing the best ways of reducing the number of out-of-school children.
FlexiSAF Foundation and Connected Development raised alarm over the high rate of out-of-school children and the how it can have a negative influence on Nigeria’s future.
Factors such as issues of insurgency, unrest and conflicts in the country altogether with deep-rooted poverty have resulted to an increase in the number of out-of-school children.
Mr. Echono assured that the Ministry of Education is currently working with the National Population Commission (NPC), Universal Basic Education (UBE), and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to tackle this menace.
